Tropical Storm Melissa Gains Power While Heads Toward the Island Nation

This powerful storm has impacted Haiti and the Dominican Republic

Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to strengthen into a infrequent category five storm as it shifts toward Jamaica, bringing deadly rapid inundation and mudslides.

This weather system, which had winds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean and is expected to reach land by midweek, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Alerts of blackouts and structural damage have been announced as this storm generates up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been advised.

This hurricane is the 13th storm in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in late autumn.

Most Intense Cyclone Danger

A category five storm is the most powerful category, with wind speeds of at least 157mph.

While this storm is expected to diminish in strength to a category four cyclone before arriving at Jamaica, experts said there was "almost no noticeable change in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the country.

Urgent Safety Steps

With tropical storm-level winds and rain anticipated well in advance long before it passes over central Jamaica - including potentially the national capital - advisories emphasize that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"An extended timeframe of harmful winds and intense precipitation have begun and will cause severe and deadly sudden floods and numerous landslides," urged meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness commented: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are anxious, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: worry is natural.

"Yet the most effective method to manage nervousness and any apprehension and worry is to be prepared."

Locals are being instructed to fortify their houses with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to accumulate necessary supplies.

Wider Consequences

Advisories are also in effect for areas in the neighboring country including the primary urban center, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Landslides presently generated by the hurricane have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Expected Trajectory

Melissa is projected to move across Cuba by Wednesday before passing across the Greater Antilles and out into the open ocean.

By the point it makes contact with Cuba, it is anticipated to have diminished to a Category 3 storm.

Environmental Background

Although it is challenging to associate specific storms to global warming, scientists say it is causing weather phenomena increasingly frequent and more intense.

Warmer oceans create more moisture in the atmosphere, aiding in the development of hurricanes.

Before the commencement of this year's Atlantic hurricane season, meteorological authorities predicted above-normal activity, mentioning heated marine conditions and likely more intense weather patterns around the western African continent - where Atlantic storms frequently develop.
